Above is an opening of the film Casino which is of a similar genre to what we are looking to do for our opening.
The film starts showing the opening titles, listing the director and production company responsible for the film. Then they set the scene by giving the date the film is set and stating it's based on a true story.
The first shot we see of a character is a long shot of him stepping through a door holding a cigarette, the shot gives us a clear view of his attire which gives us the sense he is of quite high status and well off as he is wearing a bright orange suit with a pink tie.
As he moves toward the camera with a casual pace we have a tracking shot of him going over to his car, this shot gives us a clear idea where he is as it shows a casino in the background. This helps set the scene and the time period the film is set. As he enters the car the camera zooms out, keeping the shot in frame as the car explodes. The explosion then follows on through into the opening credits, with the explosion acting as a background to the actors names.
The opening scene is simple, just one guy talking about his daughter. The lighting is very key in this scene as the only light is a top light, this low key lighting gives the character a very dark feel as large portions of his face are blacked out by shadow. This effect gives the audience the impression that this character isn't as sincere as he is making out, the fact that you can't see his eyes also gives a feeling of forbodding about him.
